Zionism Made Racist (Or was it Always?)

In 2018, the Israeli Knesset passed the “Nation-State law” which declares the superiority of Israeli Jews over all other Israelis and makes Israel the home of the Israeli Jews and of the Jews only.

Discriminatory? Racist? Not according to the Israeli Supreme Court, that in 2021 stated that since the law is “Declarative” only and it defines the Jewish character of the State, without impinging on the rights of non-Jewish Israelis or diminishing the Democratic Identity that is anchored in other Basic Laws, it should be allowed to stand.

And now, with a fascist-leaning government in power in Israel, apparently the time has come to go beyond the “Declarative” stage of the Nation-State law and put its racist declarations into practice. And who would be better suited to take this action than one of the puppets of the Otzma Yehudit party (with the help of their fascist leader Ben-Gvir), to start this process of the new Zionism.

Knesset member Yitzhak Wasserlauf has submitted a proposal to the government to make Zionism the “Guiding Principle” in government activities and strengthen the right of the Jews to “the Land of Israel”. Specifically, Settlement, Security, Culture and Aliya are named and the draft law states that “when setting and implementing policy, Zionism should be given a “meaningful” consideration.

While the wording is vague, the intentions, and consequences of the draft law are clear. In Israel, the Land of the Jews, Apartheid is taking hold, slowly but securely and the rights of non-Jewish Israelis is being trampled upon more and more.

The Druze community, a large non-Jewish segment of Israeli society, with strong bonds to the State of Israel already feels more and more alienated by legislature such as the Nation-State law and this “Zionist” initiative by Wasserlauf and his boss Ben-Gvir, may be the last straw.

But not only the Druze population will be affected by the implementation of this proposed law. The twenty plus percent of the Israelis who are not Jewish will find themselves put in their place as second-rate citizens, and will lose out in almost all aspects of life and will start to feel the discrimination and Apartheid more and more, at everything they will undertake. For people like Wasserlauf and his bosses, fanatically religious elements with fascist tendencies, only Jews count but is the average Israeli ready to move on to the next phase of the “Purification” of the Jewish State?  Is the average Israeli really willing to live in a State where non-Jews don’t count and are discriminated against by law?

Fascism and racial discrimination will only succeed and strengthen, with the approval (active or passive) of the population and while only a small group of racist politicians will be able to start the formation of a Racist State, the silent majority (if there is such a thing) will be able to stop it.

The attempts at the destruction of the legal system the government is currently attempting, is a necessary step in the move towards a racist State since the current judiciary would never allow a law that would implement racist policies on a day-to-day basis. Thus, the endless demonstrations against the “Judicial Reform” are encouraging. But the mentioning of the consequences of this so-called reform for the non-Jewish population has been conspicuously absent from most of the demonstrations and it is very unclear if the Jewish population is willing to fight against a reform that will affect non-Jews or are they worried mainly about the loss of a “Jewish Democratic” State.

Or is Jewish Supremacy what most Jewish Israelis, deep in their hearts, really endorse?
